It’s Not About Perfection. It’s About Prediction.
Why your brain works so hard to avoid mistakes.
I had this week’s Neuro Notes completely planned out. Then Saturday morning happened.
I read a blog by the brilliant Adam Grant titled There’s More to the Mental Health Crisis Than Smartphones and Social Media. And, in typical Adam Grant fashion, he absolutely crushed it.
Now, before this turns into me glazing Adam Grant, let me stop you right there. He certainly doesn’t need me doing his marketing. Because his podcast is amazing as well.
In his blog, Adam points to something we’ve been seeing for years. Perfectionism is on the rise, and it started long before smartphones and social media. Young people are increasingly worried about making mistakes, being judged, and not measuring up. Those fears are strongly connected to anxiety and depression.
He’s totally right!
In fact, he’s just the latest really smart person to tackle perfectionism. If you want to take a deep dive into the subject, checkout Kristin Neff’s book Self-Compassion or Brené Brown’s book The Gifts of Imperfection.
These are wonderful resources. And, I think neuroscience adds a little flavor to the pot. Because perfectionism is ‘a’ problem but not ‘the’ problem!
I think perfectionism is the symptom.
Prediction is the problem.
If you’ve been reading Neuro Notes for any length of time, you knew I was going to bring this back to prediction.

Here’s the short version.
Perfectionism isn’t really about getting everything right. It’s about trying to predict away uncertainty. When the brain isn’t confident about what’s going to happen next, it starts filling in the blanks. And for many people, those predictions sound like this:
“What if I disappoint them?”
“What if they think I’m not good enough?”
“What if I fail?”
“What if I lose their respect?”
Notice that every one of those thoughts is about the future.
They’re predictions!
The more uncertain the future feels, the more the brain tries to control it. One of the strategies the brain uses to gain some control is perfectionism.
Think about what happens when someone who struggles with perfectionism makes a small mistake.
They don’t simply predict, “I made an error.” Their brain predicts, “What if they think I’m incompetent?” Or “What if I fail?”
I’ve watched this play out so many times, and one of the best examples is my son, Nico.
For years I watched Nico play basketball. He was a really good player, but I noticed something. Whether it was the pressure, the expectations, or the coaching, basketball stopped feeling fun. Every missed shot frustrated him. Every turnover seemed to stick with him. It looked like he was trying not to make mistakes instead of trying to make plays.
Then high school basketball ended.
Today he’s playing in a men’s league. And it’s like watching a different kid. I knew he was good, but I didn’t realize how good he was.
He’s smiling. He’s taking chances. He’s trying passes he never would have attempted before. When he misses a shot, he shrugs, laughs, gets back on defense, and keeps playing.
Did he suddenly become a better basketball player? I don’t think that’s what changed. I think the prediction changed.
He wasn’t stepping onto the court wondering, “What happens if I mess up?”
He’s playing because he enjoys the game again.
Somewhere along the way, his brain learned that mistakes meant criticism, disappointment, or letting people down. Once that prediction faded, the joy came back.
Watching him reminded me that sometimes what steals our joy isn’t the mistake. It’s what our brain predicts the mistake says about us.
The emotional pain isn’t coming from the missed shot. It’s coming from what the brain predicts the missed shot means. The brain has already filled in an uncertain future with its worst guesses.
That’s what brains do when uncertainty feels dangerous.
Your brain would often rather make a bad prediction than have no prediction at all.
Think about it this way. If your brain predicts a meeting is going to go badly, it can prepare. If it has no clue what’s coming, that’s a much harder problem to solve.
Uncertainty is metabolically expensive. Prediction, on the other hand, conserves energy. So, when the future feels unclear, the brain starts making educated guesses.
Unfortunately, anxious brains don’t just make predictions. They make predictions that are exhausting. They convince us to spend time, energy, and emotional effort preparing for problems that often never happen.
Instead of predicting possibility, they predict catastrophe.
Perfectionism isn’t really about wanting everything to be perfect. It’s about desperately trying to eliminate uncertainty.
Think about what perfection promises the brain. If everything goes exactly right, there are fewer surprises. There are fewer chances to be criticized, embarrassed, rejected, or to fail.
The brain starts connecting the dots, “If I never make mistakes, maybe nothing bad will happen.”
This is why simply telling someone, “Stop being such a perfectionist,” rarely works. You’re asking them to let go of the very strategy their brain believes is keeping them safe.
Instead, we need to help the brain update its predictions.
Not every mistake leads to rejection. Not every awkward conversation destroys a relationship. Not every imperfect presentation ruins a career. Not every setback predicts failure.
Every time reality turns out better than the brain predicted, the brain gets an opportunity to update.
That’s what I am calling Neuro Resilience. But we will save that for another day.
Let’s get back to perfectionism and prediction.
I completely agree with Adam Grant that perfectionism deserves far more attention than it gets. I just wonder if we’ve been stopping one step too soon.
Maybe perfectionism isn’t the destination. Maybe it’s the road sign. Maybe underneath every perfectionistic thought is a brain trying to answer the question, “What will happen if I’m not perfect?”
Once the brain stops predicting that every mistake will end in disaster, perfectionism starts to lose its grip.
I promise, I’m not trying to convince people to stop being perfectionists. I’m trying to help their brain make better predictions.
When the predictions change, the behavior often changes too.
That’s why I spend less time talking about perfectionism and more time talking about prediction.
